A high-level planning commission comprising internationally renowned planners was formed to accelerate the rapid development of planned development after the independence. Since its inception, it has been recognized as a high-level professional organization.
This Planning Commission was formed by a chairman, a deputy chairman, and three members. The minister of planning is the chairman of the Planning Commission. A deputy chairman was appointed minister for managing daily affairs and using executive power (his cabinet was not the “rank” of the cabinet).
The other members of the commission were in the minister’s position. A total of 10 departments was created under the head of the Secretary-level. The departments are General Economics, Programs and Assessments, Agriculture, Industries, Water Resources, Rural Institutions, Physical Infrastructure, Socio-Economic Infrastructure, External Resources and Administration.
To complete the implementation and monitoring of the Planning Commission’s project, the “Project Implementation Bureau” was established separately, which was later converted into a separate division under the Ministry of Planning, “Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division”.
Immediately after this, the responsibility of collecting the resources for the acquisition of the property is separated from the Planning Commission, and the Finance Ministry is placed under the separate department of the present “Economic Relations Division”.
The Planning Department was established to manage all the administrative and executive activities of the Planning Commission. At the same time, the status of the Bangladesh Planning Commission was increased. Presently the Prime Minister is the chairperson of the commission.
