Agricultural Information Service (AIS) is a government agency under the Ministry of Agriculture in Bangladesh, dedicated to disseminating agricultural information to farmers and stakeholders across the country. Established in 1985, AIS plays a pivotal role in promoting modern agricultural practices, ensuring food security, and supporting the agricultural development of Bangladesh.

Historical Background

The origins of AIS trace back to the establishment of the Agriculture Information Agency in 1965. In 1985, this agency was reorganized into the Agricultural Information Service to better serve the evolving needs of the agricultural sector. The reorganization aimed to enhance the dissemination of agricultural information and technologies to farmers, extension workers, and other stakeholders.

Organizational Structure and Headquarters

AIS operates under the Ministry of Agriculture and is headquartered at Khamarbari, Farmgate, Dhaka. The agency is led by a Director, with Nurul Islam currently holding the position. AIS collaborates with various governmental and non-governmental organizations to fulfill its mission of providing timely and accurate agricultural information.

Core Functions and Activities

AIS undertakes a range of activities to disseminate agricultural information:

– Publications: AIS publishes two journals, *Krishikotha* and Samprosharon Barta, which provide insights into modern farming techniques, crop management, and other relevant topics.

-Broadcast Media: The agency produces television programs like *Mati-O-Manush* and *Banglar Krishi* on Bangladesh Television, as well as radio programs on Bangladesh Betar and community radios, to reach a wider audience.

-Call Center Services: AIS operates a call center that allows farmers to obtain information on various agricultural topics, facilitating direct communication and support.

Training and Workshops**: The agency organizes training sessions, workshops, and seminars to educate farmers and extension workers on modern agricultural practices and technologies.

Media and Communication Tools

AIS employs a multi-media approach to disseminate information, utilizing print, electronic, and digital platforms. This includes the production of training guides, newsletters, films, and the use of ICT tools to ensure that information reaches farmers effectively.

Collaborations and Partnerships

AIS collaborates with approximately 15 organizations, including the Department of Agricultural Extension, various agricultural research institutes, the Forest Department, the Department of Agricultural Marketing, the Soil Resources Development Institute, and the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC). These collaborations aim to enhance the reach and effectiveness of agricultural information dissemination.

Regional Offices and Outreach

To ensure nationwide coverage, AIS has established regional offices, such as the one in Sylhet, which provide localized agricultural information and services. These offices play a crucial role in addressing region-specific agricultural challenges and disseminating relevant information to local farmers.

Impact and Significance

AIS has significantly contributed to the modernization of agriculture in Bangladesh by providing farmers with access to vital information on crop management, pest control, and sustainable farming practices. By leveraging various media and communication tools, AIS ensures that farmers are well-informed and equipped to make decisions that enhance productivity and sustainability.

Future Prospects

Looking ahead, AIS aims to further integrate advanced technologies, such as digital platforms and mobile applications, to enhance the accessibility and efficiency of agricultural information dissemination. The agency is committed to continuous improvement and innovation to meet the evolving needs of the agricultural sector in Bangladesh.
